Heavy metals (mercury, lead, &amp; aluminum) and fluoride are chemicals which can cause enlarged thyroid.
Most common reason for enlarged thyroid is iodine deficiency. Foods which contain iodine  are seafood, iodized salt,watercress and brown seaweed (also known as bladderwrack and Fucus Vesiculosis).
